MARILEE HALL ON YOUTUBE
Throughout my career I have made work
that has tended toward the whimsical – vessels and
sculptural forms with a lift. The work has felt spirited
to me, almost inhabited. There has been a narrative
element to my tiled wall constructions which I think is
spreading to my sculpture. So I would say that in this,
my 30th year in clay, my work is becoming more
story-driven. Sometimes, it feels illustrative of folk
tales, sometimes, a compassionate look at the human
psyche. I am drawn to figurative work, enjoying the
spirit expressing outward through human, cat and bird
bodies, and even through the spirited vessel. I continue
to work with a white earthenware clay body, creating
combinations of colors and textures via manipulation of
the clay and the use of under-glazes, glazes and
specialty glazes. The clay object has such history,
moving with mankind onward from the nomadic life to
food-storing, community-building, and personal
expression. Even at its most idiosyncratic, ceramic work
continues to be fed by its long roots. I revel in the
nourishment clay provides.
